Dr Gaboose’s jaundiced-eye view of Somaliland democracy!

Words can be used as powerful weapons at the times of high political tensions and the politicians with devious nature can try to persuade others to accept their points of views however misleading it might be, by twisting and tangling anything that their intending audience care.

Just like predator hunts it’s Prey, so do the deceitful politicians. They pursue their audience with ferocious claims. They interpret every law in the land the way they wish for. They create fears by giving imaginary horror stories that would be the fate of the nation if people would not vote for them, and they dress their political opponent as a devil with two horns and tail.

This is the case in Somaliland today, because as it seems our constitution is in every politician and propagandist pocket and when ever people feel like arguing over political matter they pick the part that approves their points and they twisted it around.

Case in point, in a desperate attempt to cause uprising in Somaliland cities once again Mr Gaboose deliberately misinterpreted Somaliland constitution in his recent interview with Kulmiy’s Radio Horyaal.

He argues that after 15 of May the Somaliland president would be just like any other citizen who has no power. And he quoted article 88 in the constitution which to be fair to the doctor limits the terms that the president can hold the office in a normal and a peaceful time.

(Article 88: Term of Office 1. The term of office of the President and the Vice-President is 5 years beginning from the date that they are sworn into office. 2. No person may hold the office of President for more than two terms)

While Mr Gaboose on his own right quoted article 88 in the constitution, the further arguments that he attached to his debate itself proves to be unconstitutional and falsified facts. Because not only Mr Gaboose blindfolded himself from the realities that exist Somaliland today but he also sidelined some important part of the very constitution that he is explaining to the Somaliland people.

In his interview Mr Gaboose said on 15 May president Rayaal should not hold the dignity and title of presidency. And he argued other institutions in the country have no rights to extend any further term for president Rayaale to stay in power.

But in an obvious contradiction to this argument, he at sametime urged the opposition parties and the Guurti to form a transitional government which would probably have a president and vice president in place.

And this is where Dr Gaboose’s blunder need to be proved wrong because as far as Somaliland constitution concerns the president and the vice president of the republic of Somaliland should be elected in to the office by the public in a secret ballot.

And for Goboose to suggest otherwise is a contradiction to the very constitution he wishes to depose the current president and his vice president from the office. Also Dr Gaboose ignored another part of the constitution that permitted the current administration to remain in power until the presidential election.

For the sake of the argument I wish to resuscitate this part of the constitution which Dr Gaboose sees it dead and buried under his political argument.

(Article 83: Election Procedures- 1. The President and the Vice-President shall be elected jointly through a direct general election [147] by means of a secret ballot.)

(Article 83: Election Procedure- 5. If on the expiry of the term of office of the President and the Vice-President, it is not possible, because of security considerations, to hold the election of the President and the Vice-President, the House of Elders shall extend their term of office (148] whilst taking into consideration the period in which the problems can be overcome and the election can be held)

Reading these above quotations of the constitution and the reality on the ground in Somaliland today I wonder, who Mr Gaboose thinks would be more appropriate to lead the nation knowing that the election now is postponed.

Before I decided to write this piece I had encounter with few people mainly from the south Somalia who knew Dr Gaboose in his good old days in Mogadishu and the majority of these agree one thing and that is how Dr Gaboose would never accept the separation of north and south Somali and these are their words not mine.

And also some of them called his new political career in Somaliland as and attempt to influence Somaliland affairs in order to prevent Somaliland ever succeeding its search of independent.

This is not the only obstacle that goes against Dr Gaboosi’s attempt to manipulate the public but citizenship of Mr Gaboose is also in doubts.

It is a well knowing fact that Mr Gaboose was born in Ethiopia and from there he moved to Mogadishu where he spent quarter of his life, then he came to Somaliland in 1990s and he is only a Somalilander for bloodline.

So in a fair world he would be the last person Somaliland native citizens like me would have trusted with their affairs. But our clannish nature gives Dr Gaboose the equal rights and he is abusing this right.

Finally this characteristic Mogadishu boy is poisoning Somaliland democracy by prescribing it doses of political doubts. And he is doing this with the typical (Ciyaalo Xamar) attached to it. He is also taking an advantage the honest nature of Somaliland people.

But the ironic thing is if this man was in Mogadishu today where he belongs to, he would had either be another liar politician in Mogadishu whose integrity would probably matched the other political crooks in Mogadishu or another mass murder and warlord who would have killed innocent people.
